LIBERTY UNVEILS LATEST INTERIOR FABRIC COLLECTION, BOTANICAL ATLAS, AT DÉCO OFF PARIS
17 January 2024
Liberty has unveiled its latest interior fabric collection, Botanical Atlas, at Déco Off Paris, marking the launch with an immersive gallery installation to showcase the striking flora and fauna designs.
Drawing inspiration from the global travels of its founder, Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty, the collection presents an array of 24 interior fabrics across 38 rich colourways, combining quintessential floral motifs with artistic influences from 1880s-1910s China, Japan, Persia, and India.
Referencing Persian illustrations, Indian Mughal paintings, and Japanese Edo art within the contextual fabric of the collection, Liberty designers seamlessly blend the artistic influences of Arthur’s voyage with elements of the natural world. Rare specimens, sculptural leaves, and magnificent flowers inform the botanical narrative of the collection, reimagining the natural world for interiors with new and striking scales.
Designed alongside the Botanical Atlas wallpaper collection, the fabric series introduces a range of innovative, unseen artworks and beloved archive pieces, now reimagined through a contemporary lens. The designs sit within five of the Liberty colour stories: Lacquer, Jade, Lapis, Pewter, and Lichen.
Highlight designs include Floating Pavilion, inspired by traditional Chinoiserie wallpaper panels from the 17th and 18th centuries, populated with oversized lotus flowers, pavilions, floating sampans, and birds in flight. Butterfield responds to an original artwork designed in the 1900s by one of Liberty’s most influential Arts & Crafts designers, Lindsay Butterfield. Now seen for the first time within an interior setting and enriched with dramatic shadowing, this playful poppy pattern is a reinvention of a quintessential Liberty design.
Tudor Poppy features a botanical motif inspired by a small fragment of fabric discovered in the Liberty archive dating from 1895. Bold poppies are set against an array of winding foliage and miniature flowering buds, with soft inky washes and delicate shading paying homage to Liberty’s association with the Arts & Crafts movement. Cypress Stitch offers an emboldened take on a collection of mid-19th century hand-painted shawls from the Liberty archive, brought to life through intricate embroidery and printed on grass cloth.
Introducing an elegant range of bold stripes, spots, checks, and geometrics, Liberty presents a collection of refined motifs to accompany the more elaborate flora and fauna designs of the main collection. Obi Check takes inspiration from vintage Japanese obi belts and antique kimono linings, resulting in a contemporary geometric design offered in ten different colourways.
Each fabric design is meticulously hand-painted in the Liberty Design Studio, and produced in collaboration with textile mills in Italy, Belgium, and India using traditional and cutting-edge craft techniques.
The Botanical Atlas interior fabric collection will be available to purchase in Liberty’s iconic department store in London, and online at LibertyLondon.com from February '24. The interior fabric collection complements the currently available Botanical Atlas wallpaper collection, and will be joined by a range of scarves in February ‘24, cushions in March ‘24, and apparel in April ‘24.
